- From Tanakh through the Talmud and Midrash
- In the era of the Geonim (8-11th centuries), particularly Se`adyah Gaon (882-942)
- In the era of the Rishonim (11th-15th centuries), particularly Maimonides (1035-1204)
- Sefer HaChinukh (13th century); the classic formulation of ta`amei hamitzvot (rationales for the commandments)
- A practical lesson in rationalizing mitzvot: Preparing for Shavuot
