Marc Herman is an assistant professor in the Department of Humanities and a core member of the Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Studies at York University. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he held fellowships at Columbia University, Harvard University, and Yale Law School. Marc also studied at Yeshivat Har Etzion and Yeshiva University, and he served as rabbinic intern at Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun in Manhattan. Before coming to York, Marc was also a Senior Researcher at the Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization.
Marc researches and teaches the history of Jews in the Islamic world and Jewish and Islamic jurisprudence. His publications explore the development of Maimonidean literature and intellectual contacts between medieval Jews and Muslims. He coedited Accounting for the Commandments in Medieval Judaism (Brill, 2021) and is the author of After Revelation: The Rabbinic Past in the Islamic World, currently under review at the University of Pennsylvania Press. Marc’s classes on Maimonides’s methodology of counting the commandments are available as a podcast. Marc lives in Toronto with his wife Debbie and their four cute children.
