Chanukah celebrates the victory over Greek idolatry and the cleansing of the Temple from it, but also touches upon the theme of the victory of light over darkness. This theme is not mentioned explicitly in Chazal with relation to Chanukah, but is hinted at in a short story in the Talmud. In this shiur, I will examine the origins and development of this story in various sources and versions, and the issues that arise when the story is read in its wider halakhic context.
