e-TiM: The Meaning of Torah in Early Judaism

This three-part series will take place on Tuesdays at 2:00pm Eastern, 1:00pm Central, 9:00pm in Israel

This course will explore the ways in which the concept of Torah developed among Jews in the ancient world. We will begin by exploring the relationship between written texts and oral traditions in the Tanakh, will move on to consider the controversies surrounding scriptural translation in the Second Temple period, and will close with a unit on how the notion of Oral Torah developed.

Dr. Malka Z. Simkovich

Dr. Malka Z. Simkovich is the Editor-in-Chief of the Jewish Publication Society, as well as the author of three books and over a hundred articles.  Her first book, The Making of Jewish Universalism: From Exile to Alexandria, was published in 2016, and her second book, Discovering Second Temple Literature: The Scriptures and Stories That Shaped Early Judaism, was published with JPS in 2018 and received the 2019 AJL Judaica Reference Honor Award. Her third book, Letters From Home: The Creation of Diaspora in Jewish
