Meet the Rabbis of the Talmud

Rabbanit Nechama Goldman Barash

The Talmud is full of voices—but who are the people speaking?

In this five-part series we will explore the world of the rabbis of the Talmud—who they were, how they lived, and how they shaped Jewish thought. Through close reading of Talmudic narratives alongside historical context, we will encounter these figures as thinkers, leaders, and complex human beings.

Focusing on key sages from the late Second Temple period—Shimon HaTzadik, Shimon ben Shetach, Honi and Abba Hilkiya, Hillel and Shammai, and Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai—we will trace the personalities, relationships, and ideas that helped define the rabbinic tradition.
