Rabbi Meir Simcha HaKohen led the Mitnagdic community of Devinsk from 1887 until his death in 1926. A rare thinker with mastery over the mystical and rational elements of Jewish thought, his commentary on Maimonides and the Meshech Chochma, a posthumous commentary on the Torah based on his teachings are replete with references that span the breadth of Rabbinic literature. He lead his community through world war 1, and engaged in the growing debates around the proper role of the Land of Israel in Jewish life.
