The Book of Yechezkel: The Realities of Exile, Hurban and the Visions of Redemption

Rabbi Nathaniel Helfgot

We will engage in a close reading of the book of Ezekiel which focuses on the critical period in Jewish history of the exile of the Judean tribes, the disintegration of the Davidic dynasty and the destruction of the Temple as experienced from the perspective of the Jews already living in exile. The last third of the book presents stunning and sometimes cryptic visions of the restoration of the Jewish people of the land of Israel and the rebuilding of the third Temple.

We will make use of traditional and modern analyses of the sefer with a focus on the literary-theological approach to uncovering the meaning of Tanakh.

Ezekiel Ch. 1: Maaseh Merkava: The Exit of the Divine from the Temple

Ezekiel Ch. 2-3: The Inauguration of the Prophet Ezekiel

Topics:

Tanach, Neviim, Yechezkel
