The Book of Yonah: Its Structure and Messages in Biblical and Historical Context

Wednesday October 9, 2024 1:00pm Eastern, 8:00pm Israel time

Chazal chose the Book of Yonah for the Haftara of Mincha on Yom Kippur. This lecture will elaborate the messages of the Book of Yonah and its choice as the Haftara. We will analyze the superb structure of its four chapters and present selected commentaries on several pesukim. Intertextual connections to other books from the Tanach and the historical background of Nineveh, the famous city of Assyria, will shed a new light on the story of Yonah and relevant messages to our times.

This shiur is in commemoration of the Yahrzeit of Dr. Beni Gesundheit’s father, Avraham Yonah Gesundheit z"l (1928 - Tishrei 2016).

The shiur is dedicated to the success of the soldiers protecting Israel, for a refuah shleima for the injured and a safe return for the hostages, and to the memory of all the fallen over the past year since October 7, 2023. May we merit only good tidings.
