After the trauma and triumph of the War Of Independence, the State of Israel began the real work of securing borders, housing immigrants and creating an identity. This course will look at those formative first years.

1. After the Dust Settled: Israel after the War of Independence

2. The Great Aliya: Absorbing thousands of immigrants 

4. Infrastructure and Economy: rationing and the black market, national projects

5. Knesset Yisrael: Who are the leaders and who is in the opposition

6. Religion and Holy Sites: The Judaism of the Jewish State

7. Culture and Counter Culture: music and army entertainment, Canaanite movement, writers

Meet the speaker

Shulie Mishkin

Shulie Mishkin made Aliyah from New York with a Master's degree in Jewish History from Columbia University. After completing the Ministry of Tourism guide course in 1997, she began guiding professionally and has since taught and guided all ages, from toddlers to retirees. Her tours provide a complete picture of the land of Israel and Jewish heritage, with a strong reliance on sources ranging from the Bible to 19th century travelers' reports. Alongside her regular guide work, she teaches "tour and text" courses
