Observing the state of Orthodox Jewish music in 1975, a critic wrote in Agudath Israel’s magazine, The Jewish Observer, that “Peter, Paul, and Mary went to the mikva and came out rabbis’ sons.” Yet, despite some limited opposition to the non-Jewishness of
the sound, Orthodox pop music keeps growing. As we will see, contemporary musicians are more willing than ever to push the boundaries of what frum music can be.
